Today’s 11- and 12-year-olds have grown up smart about safety thanks to parents, guardians, teachers and advocates. Caring adults have made sure this generation has always had the equipment, knowledge and rules they need to stay safe.

As a result, buckling up is second nature for most preteens. But for some kids this age, seat belt use starts to slip. And that carries a big risk. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for preteens – and most of those who die are not buckled up.

You can help ensure that wearing a seat belt remains a habit for preteens. A good way is to hold fun activities to remind kids that buckling up is something they always do whenever they ride in a car.
